Did you know

Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics; the championships return 12 years after 2015.

Ten days of world-class athletics

The World Athletics Championships return to Beijing from 10 to 19 September 2027. The 21st edition brings ten days of track and field, race walking, road running and combined events to the National Stadium, widely known as the Bird’s Nest. Beijing previously staged the championships in 2015, making this the first Chinese city to host them twice.

Beijing has another distinction: it was the first city to host both a Summer and a Winter Olympic Games. World Athletics is updating the session timetable and qualification details, so use the official Beijing 27 news page (opens in a new tab) for new announcements.

Visiting the Bird’s Nest

The National Stadium is in the Olympic Green area, north of the city centre. The park is spacious; allow time to walk between transport stops, entrances and meeting points. September is also a good window for exploring Beijing, though the stadium area will be busy on popular competition evenings.

Choose accommodation around the sessions you plan to attend. A hotel near Olympic Green can simplify stadium days; a central base suits visitors who want to add museums, parks and historic districts. Compare places to stay in Beijing (opens in a new tab), then check local transit and stadium-access guidance closer to the event.
