The 2026 Hong Kong Sevens drew 113,395 fans over three days, setting a new attendance record for the tournament.
The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens returns to Kai Tak Stadium from 9 to 11 April 2027 and opens the HSBC SVNS World Championship. The organizer has confirmed the dates and venue on its official homepage (opens in a new tab), which says ticketing details will follow. Kai Tak Stadium is inside Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon. The event's visitor details (opens in a new tab) estimate a ten-minute walk from either Kai Tak or Sung Wong Toi MTR station.
What rugby sevens looks like
Rugby sevens uses seven players per side on a full-sized rugby pitch. World Rugby describes the standard match as two halves of seven minutes, so a game has a compact rhythm compared with 15-a-side rugby. With fewer players on the same pitch, possession can open into a fast run downfield. At your first match, follow how a team moves the ball into that space.
The Hong Kong Sevens is also a three-day live event with entertainment around the rugby. The organizer's event details (opens in a new tab) describe the tournament as a blend of matches and top-tier entertainment. Match times and the wider 2027 program should be checked on the official site when the organizer posts them. For the basic rules, World Rugby's sevens FAQ (opens in a new tab) explains the seven-player format and match length.
A tournament with a long Hong Kong history
The Hong Kong Sevens began in 1976 as a one-day tournament at Hong Kong Football Club. In its 2025 ticket announcement (opens in a new tab), Hong Kong China Rugby said the first edition was played before a sellout crowd of 3,000. The tournament marked its 50th edition in 2026. Its current homepage reports that 113,395 fans attended over those three days, a new attendance record for the event. That figure belongs to the 2026 edition; it is not a forecast for 2027.
Hong Kong China Rugby says the 2025 tournament was the Sevens' first at Kai Tak Stadium, after the 2024 edition ended a 30-year run at Hong Kong Stadium. The 2027 event is at Kai Tak Stadium within Kai Tak Sports Park, rather than the former venue on Hong Kong Island.
Kai Tak Stadium and getting there
The event site lists Kai Tak Stadium at 38 Shing Kai Road, Kai Tak. Its directions put both Kai Tak and Sung Wong Toi stations within about a ten-minute walk. The Kai Tak Sports Park travel page (opens in a new tab) says both stations are on the Tuen Ma Line and that Sung Wong Toi offers quicker access to Kai Tak Stadium. Check the MTR system map (opens in a new tab) when choosing a hotel or planning a connection from elsewhere in Hong Kong.
The venue also lists buses, minibuses, ferries, cross-boundary coaches, taxis and private cars. It notes that event-day traffic and parking arrangements can change, so check its notices if you plan to drive. Before travelling by MTR, check the organizer's current guidance for entry gates and the recommended station approach. Leave time for the walk from the station and any queue at the stadium.
Tickets, schedule and accommodation
As of 19 October 2026, the organizer has announced the 2027 dates and venue but says ticketing details are still to follow. Use the official event homepage (opens in a new tab) for ticket notices rather than carrying over a price from an earlier edition. Before departure, check the organizer's site for the match schedule, entry rules and event-day updates.
With the dates confirmed, visitors can compare accommodation. A hotel near an MTR connection can make repeated trips to Kai Tak easier, while a more central base may suit a longer Hong Kong visit. Compare locations against your plans for the rest of the city, and check the return route after each event day. Browse Hong Kong accommodation (opens in a new tab), then confirm cancellation terms and transport details before paying.
