The idea for such a festival began in 1998 as a promotion for the mineral-rich mud found near Boryeong. This festival attracts thousands of visitors each year to this otherwise sleepy town on the beach.
The Japanese Fertility Festival, Kanamara Matsuri started in 1977. It was a small festival at the start, but it became bigger and bigger. Today, the festival is extremely popular among tourists and is used to raise money for HIV research.
