Lopburi Monkey Buffet Festival is the annual attraction that lures tourists to one of Thailand’s oldest cities. The Monkey Banquet Festival is held on the last Sunday of November.
During this period, the city is filled with long-tailed macaque monkeys. These monkeys are considered to be a bit of good luck for the city.
Because of that, people do not dare to do anything to them even if they ruin the city electricity cables. These monkeys freely wander the city streets and they might eat whatever they want.
On this particular day, people from all over Thailand set up food tables especially for them to eat from. Showing respect and gratitude to the monkeys, believed to be descendants of the heroic monkey army of Hanuman, participants set up a lavish buffet banquet for the monkeys during the festival.
The Lopburi Monkey Festival usually takes place at the ruins of Khmer. People tend to decorate streets and their house roofs with colored fruits for monkeys to eat.
These monkeys are acquainted with Thai people and they do not shy away from tourists as well. Thai people have huge respect for these monkeys so they let them do whatever they want.
The Monkey Banquet is split into four sittings:
- 10:00 AM
- 12:00 PM
- 02:00 PM
- 04:00 PM
Lopburi is an old city which has a lot of attractive ancient buildings along with the food offerings to the monkeys. Some of the food included in the feasts includes sticky rice, fruit, and salad.
In addition to monkeys, the Lopburi Monkey Festival also has live performances and dances, with monkeys participating throughout. If you plan to join the feast, keep in mind that monkeys will be everywhere – including the top of your head!
