The idea for such a festival began in 1998 as a promotion for the mineral-rich mud found near Boryeong. This festival attracts thousands of visitors each year to this otherwise sleepy town on the beach.
Thanks to word of mouth, good entertainment and cool photographs of people covered in mud, the festival has become an international phenomenon.
There are also competitive activities during the mud festival, such as the Mr. Mud contest, mud races, and even mud wrestling. There are contests for mud facials, body painting, and soap-making as well.
You can enjoy the romantic scenery of Daecheon Beach or just simply relax in the crystal blue waters after a long day of rolling and splashing in the mud. The mud festival takes place over a period of around two weeks, it is most famous for its final weekend – usually the second weekend in July.
A large stage is erected on the beach during the festival. It is used for live music events, competitions, and various other visual attractions during this unique and fun festival.
Although the main attraction is the mud, Boryeong features impressive entertainment events as well. Hip-hop and pop performers from around the globe affirm its status as an international event.
